A Discount Can Go a Long Way

Dogs in our day and age are being treated like human unlike before. Dog owners give them dog accessories such as dog clothes, dog shoes, dog beds and many more, dogs even have their own brand of shampoos.

Some of us also treat them to restaurants that are exclusively for dogs only or some dog spas. Some dogs, specially the small ones, are being pampered like a baby in our time and age.

Dog owners treat their dogs like their part of their family, giving them stuff that a human usually uses, commonly a dog bed. But dog beds are a bit costly for some, specially those luxurious dog beds, but there is some dog accessory shop that sells discount dog beds for dog lovers that has a little bit problem when it comes to budget.

Now you might be thinking that discount dog beds might be fake and that they can break easily, well not all of dog accessory shops are like that. There are dog accessory shop that sells different kinds of discount dog beds such as large discount dog beds, orthopedic discount dog beds, small discount dog beds, even some luxury discount dog beds, round discount dog beds, extra large discount dog beds, outdoor discount dog beds, heated discount dog beds, memory foam discount dog beds, wicker discount dog beds, personalized discount dog beds, wooden discount dog beds, fleece discount dog beds, suede discount dog beds, foam discount dog beds and many more discount dog beds.

Now if you’re thinking of buying some discount dog beds, you just have to pick the right vendor in which you would like to buy, remember, there are some dog accessory shop that helps dog owners by providing some discount dog beds because some of them only cares for the wellbeing of dogs.

Buying Disposable Diapers on eBay

Buying Disposable Diapers on eBay

Everyone knows that eBay is good for two things, finding a great deal, and thinking you have a good deal, but subsequently finding out you overpaid tremendously.  A recent search of eBay showed that they have almost 20,000 listings for baby diapers.   It would take you an unthinkably long time to go through all of these results.   Even worse, when you find something, how do you know if that price is really a good deal or not?
Introduction to buying diapers on eBay:
The first thing to do is to simply search for diapers, but to get the right results, normally type in the brand name, type and size you are looking for.  Sometimes you can find good deals by just typing in words like “diapers” or other search terms, in case someone misspelled Huggies, Pampers, Luvs, Etc.  This is impractical though as we previously mentioned there were almost 20,000 listings on eBay, but you might get lucky.  In addition though, most sales on eBay use the “buy it now” feature, meaning that diapers are not listed in auction format, and finding a mislabeled package of diapers where you can “snipe” it is probably not going to happen.
Buying diapers on eBay, and their search and sort functions:
Initially, you can type “diapers” in the search box on eBay.  This will give you a list of roughly 20,000 (or so, depending on the number of active listings, etc.).   After searching “diapers”, there is a link on the left-hand side of your screen under the bolded heading of “Categories”, which says “disposable diapers”.   Click this link, and your results will drop several thousand (a recent search diminished this by roughly 18,000 results).  One word of caution is that this will only show those results in this category.  Sometimes people list their items in the wrong or different category and if you restrict the category here, you may miss some good deals.   To avoid this, you can search by brand name and size in the search bar, which we detail later.
The first thing you can do is to specify the sort functions.  One of the first methods is to sort by newly posted listings.  Sometimes people post a “buy it now” listing with a price that is really low.  By searching these newly posted listings, sometimes you can take advantage of these very low prices first.  Normally though, these listings get picked over pretty quickly, and you will want to stop looking after listings have been on eBay for several hours (usually about 5 hours is where the author stops).
If this does not work, then select the “auctions only” button, and sort for “items ending soonest”.  This will give you a list of all of the auctions that are ending in the next few minutes.  Many times you can find packages of diapers that no one has bid on.  Make sure you check the price per diaper before you bid though.   Also, make sure you include any shipping charges (many sellers no longer charge shipping, but sometimes, the shipping charges can be , or , so be very careful about this).
Another search method is to sort by price + shipping lowest first.  Normally, you should select the “buy it now” only tab in the center of the eBay screen, because many people list auctions at .99 or some other small amount.  Therefore, by looking at the “buy it now” only links, you will be able to find the least expensive deals.
A final note is that you can always do the aforementioned searches and filters with a search of “diapers”, but you can further specify, for example, “Pampers Cruisers size 3″ to get a list of more accurate searches.  The problem with this level of detail in your search is that not every seller will list a size or the type (i.e. Cruisers in the above example).   Therefore, broader searches should yield better savings, but unfortunately, they take more time.  Keep in mind though, that many sellers sell similar items, coupons, or other things aside from diapers.   In the “Categories” heading on the left side, you should always select “diapering”, “diapers” or “disposable diapers”.   This will depend where you are, but this is the easiest way to narrow down items that are otherwise irrelevant to your searches.
Finding a good deal:
Finding sellers on eBay claiming to have the “best price”, “lowest deal”, etc. is usually marketing puffery.   You have to be very careful about what you purchase, and again, a seller may have the lowest price on Huggies size 2, but might have an extraordinarily high price on Huggies size 3.   The key is to make sure you do an apples-to-apples comparison between eBay, other websites, and even your local store.   Sometimes, you can find diapers at your local store for much cheaper than you can on eBay, but generally eBay will at least be as competitive as your local store, and will often times, depending on how hard you look, have better deals than other online stores.
An example of this, is one eBay seller’s website who claims to have the “bestselling diaper” and they have the “lowest price on eBay”.   This seller offered a box of Huggies diapers, which were available in five sizes.   Size 1-2 offers 192 diapers for .99 at a cost of .21 per diaper.   Buying at a warehouse club saves you .45 on a similar-sized package, and even purchasing at WalMart.com saves almost .00 over this package.  These savings mean that you are paying almost .00 more buying this package on eBay. However, size 6 Huggies Sung and Dry from this seller offers a better deal than anyone else, at .01 less  than anything in the <A rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push();” href=” http://www.intelligentmommy.com/ebay_diaper_calculator.asp”>Intelligent Mommy database</a> (or a savings of .00).
Rather than do all the work yourself, Intelligent Mommy has a free disposable diaper calculator that lets you automatically check the price on eBay diapers, and compares it to both local and other online pricing.  Tools like this ensure that you are getting the best price on diapers before you buy.
Tips and tricks:
One of the tricks the author used in the past was to find damaged boxes of diapers.  Bags of diapers are different from boxes.  When a bag is punctured, the diapers are exposed, and subsequently whatever the bag is exposed to, the diapers inside are exposed to.  Boxes are different, usually they have several individually wrapped packages.  Therefore, if the box is smashed, cracked, cut, broken, etc. the packages inside often may be perfectly preserved.   Although this is a risk, finding “ugly” boxes of diapers has proved to be a very big cost saver for the author’s family.
Another tip is to use calculators, or to do your own research.   Intelligent Mommy offers a series of online calculators that make identifying whether a deal on eBay is good or not, but there are other resources out there to help you out.
Finally, be aware that just because someone says “best”, “cheapest”, etc. on eBay, does not mean it is necessarily true.  There are exceptional deals on eBay, but they are far and few between.
Intelligent Mommy provides diaper-pricing calculators online and on your cell phone, along with other tools, communities and forums to help mothers save on the things that babies use the most.  Visit us at http://www.intelligentmommy.com/ for more information.

Bitch Pampering!

Aug 26th, 2010 by
Bitch Pampering!

by Ben Cooper
Bitch Pampering!

My sincere apology goes out to all the intelligent women in this world for my article title as well as for what I’m about to say, but my problem is that I’ve been completely unable to find you. Where are you??? After many years of trying every idea in my extremely creative repertoire, I’ve failed to find even one truly intelligent woman. Now I can’t stand hip hop music (gansta garbage) but my experience with women over the last 10 years has gradually forced me to agree with the writers that bitch is a fairly appropriate term for modern day women. The word pampering comes from the women themselves. It’s what they say they want. It’s their concept of being treated well and the proof is in the countless number of businesses that have flourished by catering to their slavish desires. There must be at least 2 or 3 nail salons on every busy block of every town and city in the United States. 50 years ago, there wasn’t a woman alive who would even consider having her toenails cut by another woman in full view of the public where she can be seen through the store front window.
Here’s a quote from the Oprah Magazine: “Could you use a little pampering this holiday season? Behold a harvest of luxurious beauty treats.” Yecccch! And then “When was your last long soak in the tub? And just how old is that loofah in your shower?” I don’t even want to think about that because I buy a new loofah every week, don’t I? For the past four years in St. Louis, the Women’s Support and Community Services Program has hosted a monthly Day of Pampering that has been extremely successful because women are able to get massages, pedicures, and facials from other women who donate their time and skills to help them feel pampered. It’s a cabal. If I never hear the words “girls night out” again it will be too soon for me! And from the United Kingdom comes this hot press release entitled Women Pamper Themselves: “Sales of bubble bath, face masks, massage oils and other female pampering products have more than trebled, suggesting that women in the UK are more concerned with making themselves feel loved and pampered than relying on the men in their lives. This steep rise in sales of indulgent beauty treats highlights the trend that women are ditching their men for their girlfriends!” Now what are all the sincere and desperate men supposed to do about a thing like that?
There’s a big difference between intelligence and wisdom. I don’t expect to find more than a handful of people in this world who possess true wisdom so I was nauseated to discover an organization called the Women of Wisdom Foundation who have a Sacred Pampering Day for Women, and I quote: “Women enter a healing temple and can sample a diverse selection of products and services from a variety of experts in the art of pampering women.” I can imagine Mother Mary up there somewhere being stunned by this spectacle of desecration in a thing somebody has the nerve to call a temple!
Here’s another press release from Naperville, Illinois, entitled Spa Girl Parties, Inc. – Pampering Women Across the Country 100 Times Over: “Welcome to the fabulously fun and pampered world of Spa Girl Parties where we cater to your need for pampering and your appetite to shop till you drop.” Need I say more? Is anybody gagging with a spoon yet? Next, a hot wire flashes from the Columbia University News Service: “Wilderness adventures now come with up-scale pampering. Your wilderness experience includes soft beds, fancy food and relaxation. This year’s menu includes a cheese and fruit tray, artichokes, chips with Mexican dip and salsa for appetizers; a mixed grill of pork tenderloin and duck, halibut and filet mignon for the main course; and apple pie, cobbler or tiramisu for dessert – all cooked in Dutch ovens.” Quite obviously, camping will never be the same. Modern day women have brought an entirely new meaning to the concept of “roughing it”.
And finally, what about waxing? Good Lord, even a queen bee doesn’t want to be waxed. This mysterious modern phenomenon is purported to be “the best way to get a smooth and shiny look around the bikini line. It removes everything in your nether regions, leaving you completely smooth everywhere under your underwear and you’ll never have to worry about escaping tendrils again.” Oh, I’m SO glad to hear that because those escaping tendrils had completely escaped my notice. And I notice everything when I’m down there! As a person who is inclined to notice things, it does not escape my superior power of observation that this entire article could easily be classified as a rant. However, even though the concept of men’s rights has been whittled down to a short paragraph, it still includes the right to complain.

Customer Review:
I know there are tons of complaints against these diapers. But I must say to my children, were great diapers. We used pampers since my son was born. I was completely in love with Pee indicator used to put on swaddlers. I was angry when removed, and then found that the diapers are heavily scented. I felt as if they had just arrived from baby powder factory. When switching to a dry version of Max, I noticed the smell disappeared. I never had a loss of these children and my son is a super soaker. He never Diaper two. They are also thinner, so it fits more in the diaper bag, diapers, trolleys, drawer changing table, or what you are. My son will be a year now and we intend to use the first versions of these cruisers. They feel as soft as the original swaddlers to see how it can be troublesome for children with sensitive skin. My son has never had a problem with it.

At the beginning we wanted to try Huggies as well, just to compare the two products. From the get-go, the Huggies leaked, so we threw out the package immediately, and went back to using these Pampers. We have had no problems with these diapers, and keep ordering more. Would definitely recommend this product to others.
Shop ForPampers Swaddlers Dry Max Diapers, Economy Plus, Size 1-2 (up To 15 Lbs), 252 DiapersA+++++I have been using pampers swaddlers since Jan 2010 when my son was born so I have used both the original and now the dry max and have no complaints. I consider them high quality and I am very happy with their performance and I have tried several other name brand diapers that I was not happy with. Not once have they ever leaked or caused a rash and my son seems completely happy with them as well. For my family pampers has been the diaper for us!!
OrderPampers Swaddlers Dry Max Diapers, Economy Plus, Size 1-2 (up To 15 Lbs), 252 DiapersOKAfter reading all the negative reviews, I must say that I was very skeptical about these diapers. However, after having used them, I can’t say that they are either very good or very bad. We’ve used a wide range of diapers for our two kids, and this one does the job adequately. A small issue I have with these are that they don’t seem to hold as much pee as the Cruisers, which is probably enough to cause me to look elsewhere. Especially considering that this new line is advertised as “Dry Max”. I’ll stick with my Huggies and Kirkland brands.
Pampers Swaddlers Dry Max Diapers, Economy Plus, Size 1-2 (up To 15 Lbs), 252 DiapersBetter than I thoughtI like these diapers despite my concerns based on some reviews. The wetness indicator works well, they are roomy for our 8 week baby (13 lbs), and they keep him dry comparing to other diapers that do not have a mesh inside.
Pampers Swaddlers Dry Max Diapers, Economy Plus, Size 1-2 (up To 15 Lbs), 252 DiaperssaleNo rash for us, but there are other issuesIt was very unnecessary for Pampers to come out with Dry Max technology. The previous baby dry variety were perfect. We didnt get a rash but these diapers are still weird. They are thin, have a purple tint to them, and smell sweet. All of that is so unnatural to me. They do not hold pee well at all. They get very heavy and you really need to change more often as a result. They are also inferior night time diapers. My daughter would wake up and have leaked out every day for three days onto her sheet. I really hope these go away.
BuyPampers Swaddlers Dry Max Diapers, Economy Plus, Size 1-2 (up To 15 Lbs), 252 DiapersSwaddle Waddle WaddleI received both the Pampers Cruisers Dry Max and the Pampers Swaddlers Dry Max Diapers from Vine. A good friend’s daughter was the perfect size for these (18 lbs) and she was thrilled to try them out. The Swaddlers fit perfectly, but the Cruisers were (as to be expected) a little big. After a few weeks of use, her reaction was lukewarm. Since the baby was starting to be a little more active, the Swaddlers were a little too constraining. She ended up only using them around bedtime. The Cruisers were, however, still a little big but she thinks once the baby grows into them, they will be great. I also think it’s adorable how the Swaddlers have pictures of baby Sesame Street characters, while the Cruisers show the characters a little more grown up. I would recommend the lower size Swaddlers, but once the baby starts to get more active, they may not be the best choice.
BuyingPampers Swaddlers Dry Max Diapers, Economy Plus, Size 1-2 (up To 15 Lbs), 252 DiapersStill the Best! After reading so many negative reviews, I decided that I have to write a positive one. I haven’t had any problems with the new Dry Max Pampers, and I have a number of friends who use them and haven’t had any problems. My daughter leaked all the time at night when I used the old Swaddlers, but she doesn’t leak with the Dry Max. Sure, they have a smell to them, but so do the old Swaddlers. It’s really not that bad! All diapers have some smell to them, and Pampers still smell better than a lot of other brands. As far as diaper rashes go, I have friends whose babies got diaper rashes from the old Swaddlers too. Some babies are just very sensitive to certain diapers. I don’t think the problem is as bad as some people are making it out to be. Pampers would recall the diapers if that many babies got severe diaper rashes from them. I do feel bad for the babies who were affected, though. Overall, I think the Swaddlers Dry Max are great. Pampers are still the best diapers to me!

Parental Decisions Regarding Bed-wetting and Diapers

Parental Decisions Regarding Bed-wetting and Diapers

by Chris-Gonzales90
Parental Decisions Regarding Bed-wetting and Diapers

I posted the article “ Should Older Children, Adolescents, and Teenagers Be Required to Wear Diapers to Bed?” on the Health Central Network also and one reader named “Guest” felt that an older child or teen might feel they’re being punished by their parents by requiring them to wear diapers to bed. I responded with the article “Parental Decisions Regarding Bed-Wetting and Diapers.” I realize what I’ve said is very controversial and goes against the grain of most people’s thinking(both professional and non-professional) on this subject. The point of my original article was to get people to see this issue in a whole new light.     I can certainly see “Guest’s” point of view however he said several things in his reply that just proved my point .One of them was “Kids do have difficulty “seeing two feet beyond their noses” to understand the consequences of their decisions. “They also tend to have a somewhat distorted view of the priorities” and “Where the parents come in is in the fact that because they are older, can often have a more realistic view of the “big picture.””     The big picture as I (and I believe most people) see it is to be able to manage the bed-wetting in a manner that makes the youngster feel comfortable and helps them maintain hygiene. If a youngster doesn’t wear protective garments and lays all night in urine soaked sheets or wears a product that leaks how is this helping them with hygiene or making them feel comfortable?     I think requiring a youngster to wear some type of diaper to bed strikes most people as being punitive due primarily to the fact that diapers conjure up an image of being a baby. Due to the negative image of diapers, people associate requiring an older child, adolescent,or teen to wear them to bed as something degrading and therefore punitive. People are very symbol oriented-flags,national anthems, art, medals, and clothing are just some of the symbols we impart certain meanings and value to. To many individuals a diaper is a symbol too-a symbol of being a baby. But we must remember that the meaning and value we impart to a symbol is not intrinsic-we are the ones to give it meaning and value. There is nothing intrinsically babyish about diapers-they’re just an absorbent material folded and placed between the legs then fastened around the waist of an individual to help manage incontinence. It would help a great deal if dictionaries define a diaper in this way instead of being a garment worn by babies. By not acknowledging that incontinent individuals and bed-wetters also need diapers it reinforces the implicit assumptions people have regarding diapers which in turn perpetuates the image of diapers being babyish. If I was responsible for writing the entry for diaper in the dictionary I would define it this way: “An absorbent garment folded and placed between the legs of an individual then fastened around the waist designed to protect individuals with bed-wetting problems, incontinence, and as a basic garment for infants before they are potty trained.”     In my opinion it’s all about the parent’s attitude. If the parents are putting the child, adolescent,or teenager in diapers to humiliate, punish,or degrade them then it is wrong. If however the parents are using the diapers as a tool to deal with the bed-wetting then this is acceptable in my opinion.     Another thing Guest mentions is that my comparison between wearing a cast and wearing a diaper is “comparing apples and oranges.” He said-”A child won’t necessarily get sick or have a detrimental consequence of not wearing protection for bed-wetting as long as hygiene is maintained” But “not wearing protection for bed-wetting” can have a negative effect on hygiene. Frequent exposure to urine can cause skin breakdown, ulceration, and infection.     I was reading that normal urine pH is between 6.0 and 6.5 whereas the urine pH of incontinent people is between 8.0 and 9.0 which means it’s more alkaline. This in turn can irritate the skin. To quote one article-”Prolonged exposure to urine is known to chemically irritate the skin and impair its function.” Although wearing certain types of diapers can also cause skin problems, these problems can be minimized or eliminated by using the appropriate skin care products such as lotions, powders creams, and ointments in addition to cleaning one’s self thoroughly after changing the diapers. Without wearing diapers you’re just exposing more areas of the skin to negative effects.      I’ll reiterate the following point-I do believe that parents should be understanding in terms of having the youngster wear diapers. That’s the reason I suggested implementing the reward system to encourage them to try the diapers and plastic pants out. It’s important to use this system for at least 6 months-some youngsters might need a year. It’s my contention that the older child, adolescent, or teenager will be motivated to wear them because of the rewards. By using a reward system to encourage them to wear diapers to bed they’ll associate wearing diapers with something pleasant-getting a reward. After a suitable time period they’ll probably be so comfortable waking up in a dry bed they won’t need the rewards anymore and will wear the diapers and plastic pants to bed of their own accord.     One of the most important aspects of dealing with an illness whether mental or physical is the sense of having some level of control over it. Having this feeling of control improves a person’s self-esteem. This is a recurring theme in discussions and debates about using diapers to manage bed-wetting with older children, adolescents, and teenagers. I touch on this issue frequently in my articles and I thought I would touch on it more in the present one.     The prevailing view among most people whether medical professionals or not is that older children, adolescents, and teenagers should be granted autonomy in their decisions about what type of protection to wear to bed. The reasoning behind this is that by forcing them to wear diapers to bed you’re making them feel babyish. Independence is very important as children get older but in this context the main issue is the following: if the child, adolescent,or teen chooses a product that doesn’t offer adequate protection or chooses to wear no protection at all should the parents judgement about what the most appropriate form of protection to wear to bed trump the youngster’s need for independence? I personally feel it should but everybody’s different.    As pointed out in my article “Ways Parents Can Encourage Older Children,Adolescents, and Teenagers to Wear Diapers to Bed” I think it’s important for the parents of an older child to explain why you chose a particular style of diaper to manage their bed-wetting. This includes the advantages the particular product has over other products and how these advantages will help them more effectively manage their bed-wetting. This in turn will make the youngster feel more comfortable and secure. Additionally the parents should listen to the child if they have any misgivings about wearing a certain type of diaper and let them know that you understand how they feel. At this point the parents should talk to the child about various strategies the child can use to help them with wearing nighttime diapers and the particular reward system they’ve put in place to help them adjust to the protection. It would be helpful if the parents get the child’s feedback on the reward system. By discussing the merits of a particular product and how this will help the child feel more comfortable and secure,by listening to any concerns the youngster might have, and by getting their thoughts on the reward system,it makes the child feel that your decision is not an arbitrary one and that you’re not trying to belittle or humiliate them. Finally it shows that you respect the child’s feelings on the matter which will make it more likely that they won’t resist putting the garments on before going to bed. Many parents dread the possibility of this nighttime battle and the previous suggestions will help in this regard.    As far as teenagers are concerned,it can be quite a challenge convincing them of the merits of wearing diapers to bed. The majority of teenagers are very sensitive about the idea of independence and many of them are highly resistant to parental demands in general and wearing protection to bed in particular. The need for autonomy increases significantly during these years. The book “Reclaiming Youth At Risk- Our Hope for the Future” by Larry K. Brendtro, Martin Brokenleg, and Steve Van Bockern has the following to say concerning this: “The desire to acquire greater independence accelerates rapidly during early adolescence. One survey asked students to rate the importance of 24 value statements, one of which was “to make my own decisions.” This value increased more between fifth and ninth grades than any other.”    With this in mind, a different approach is warranted with teenagers. In some cases parents give teenagers money for good grades. For example, they might give the teen a certain amount for each B earned and a certain amount for each A received. A similar system could be put into place to encourage the teenager to wear diapers to bed. Ideas along these lines as well as various strategies a youngster can use to help them cope with wearing diapers to bed are described in my my article “Ways to Encourage Older Children,Adolescents, and Teenagers to Wear Diapers to Bed and Other Topics.”    I’ve since rethought somewhat my previous position on requiring teenagers to wear diapers to bed for bed-wetting. I still feel older children should be required to wear diapers to bed if the attempts to

Should Parents Require Older Children, adolescents, and Teenagers to Wear Diapers to Bed?

Should Parents Require Older Children, adolescents, and Teenagers to Wear Diapers to Bed?

by sewitsforyou
Should Parents Require Older Children, adolescents, and Teenagers to Wear Diapers to Bed?

I’ve heard parents say that it’s okay if an older child, adolescent,or teenager doesn’t want to wear diapers to bed provided they take care of the wet clothes and bedding but I think that sends the wrong message. I think it sends the message that it’s okay to be unsanitary. As mentioned previously it’s unsanitary and unhealthy(not to mention uncomfortable) to lie all night in wet sheets and clothing. The following analogy might help. If a youngster has a cut you would have them put on a band-aid in order to prevent blood from getting on their clothes and on other stuff in the house in addition for sanitary reasons. Wearing a diaper to bed should be viewed no differently-the diaper is a band-aid for a bladder control problem. Or if the youngster was going to go out in the rain the parents would see to it that they wear a raincoat or use an umbrella to keep the child from getting wet. All of them are waterproof and all of them serve the function of keeping the individual from getting wet.    The bottom line is that people do not like getting wet and take the appropriate precautions to prevent that from happening. Setting aside concerns of being unsanitary and uncomfortable for the moment, even if the child or teen did offer to wash their own sheets and garments it should be mentioned to them that it is much more time consuming and a lot more work to wash a whole bunch of wet sheets, blankets, and pajamas than to wash the wet diapers and plastic pants.    Right now I’d like to touch on the following. Many parents might be wondering if they should require their older child, adolescent, or teen to wear diapers to bed if all methods to cure the bed-wetting have failed and they leak through the pull-ups or “Goodnites”. The consensus seems to be that the child or teen should be involved in the selection of what type of garments to wear to bed. While I agree with this theory in principle,in practice it might not work out all the time. The reasoning behind this theory is that by letting the child or teen be involved in the decision making process they will feel more in control of the situation thereby improving their self-esteem which in turn will make them feel less embarrassed.    Many children, adolescents, and teenagers feel babyish about bed-wetting and a large number of people feel that by forcing them to wear diapers to bed you are taking the decision about how to deal with the bed-wetting out of their hands thereby making them feel even more like a baby. I can certainly understand this point of view but in many situations parents make decisions for their older child or teenager that are in their best interests but they don’t like. Wearing glasses and braces are just two things that come to mind. If it were up to the youngster they wouldn’t wear glasses and braces at all. Is it such a stretch to apply the same reasoning to the use of diapers to manage bed-wetting? Besides I would think it would be less embarrassing and stressful for the child or teenager to wear diapers to bed than wear glasses or braces-after all since the diapers are worn only at night their friends won’t notice them whereas with the glasses or braces they will.    While it is good to grant children and teenagers more autonomy as they get older in order for them to be a more confident and responsible adult there are certain types of knowledge that only come with experience. Choosing an appropriate incontinence product is one of them-there’s a lot of trial and error involved in choosing an incontinence product that works well. There are many factors involved in choosing an appropriate incontinence product-the type and level of incontinence, whether your incontinence is during the day, night,or both, how absorbent the product is and how effectively it protects the individual, how durable a product is,a person’s budget, how discreet the products are,how certain products effect an individual’s skin, whether or not a person has the time and/or desire to wash diapers and plastic pants, etc. While adults have the capability to weigh these decisions and are able to make a sound choice in the matter, many children and teens don’t have the maturity, knowledge, experience, and ability to make an informed choice in this situation. Their decision about what type of incontinence product to wear to bed will be influenced by what they perceive the image of diapers to be rather than how well the product keeps them dry at night.    Parents are in a better position to judge what type of product will be best at managing their youngster’s bed-wetting. They know how much the youngster wets at night and have experience in dealing with diapers when the youngster was a baby so they’re familiar with how absorbent and effective various diapers are. This puts them in a better position to evaluate how well a particular product will work in protecting both the youngster and the bed. If a child or teenager’s current bed-wetting product is not offering adequate protection and if after weighing all options the parents come to the conclusion that pin-on diapers and plastic pants,tape-on disposables,or other garments will be better at keeping the youngster dry at night then the parents should have the final say in the matter.    The same is true with any medical issue. If the youngster is being treated for a certain illness and the method currently being used is not solving or adequately managing the problem then it’s time to consider alternative courses of action and ultimately the adult due to their life experience is best qualified to make that decision. A diaper should be viewed no differently than other medical equipment for managing various medical problems such as an inhaler for asthma,a wheelchair for paralysis,a hearing aid,a cast for a broken arm, etc.    One of the other things that puzzles me is this-children wore diapers when they were babies to protect themselves from wetness why should that change when they get older? The parents are in effect saying- “ well you’re still wetting yourself but you’re getting too old to still protect yourself.” Although the parents should have the final say in the matter I don’t think they should be cruel or callous about it. Also there are cases where parents have used diapers to try to shame the child or teen into stopping the bed-wetting or as a form of punishment. I find this practice reprehensible and a form of child abuse.    To get back to how to approach the older child or teen about wearing diapers to bed I think the parents should be gentle but firm. Some parents are from the “my way or the highway” school of parenting and while that approach might be necessary with some youngsters and in some situations and circumstances I feel that it’s not warranted in this case. The parents should put themselves in the youngster’s place-they should be empathetic and help them realize that it’s in the youngster’s best interest to wear the diapers to bed. As I said you need to emphasize to them that people of all ages wet the bed and many of them use diapers at night otherwise they wouldn’t manufacture so many different sizes. Again I would tell them that since there are so many different styles of diapers-tape-on,pin-on,pull-on,etc that must mean that there are advantages to some of them with certain people and in certain circumstances. I would stress to them that although wearing diapers might be unpleasant, the alternative, waking up in cold, soaking wet sheets is a lot worse.    I would tell them the reasoning behind why you chose one type of diaper over another. You can talk to them about the different types of diapers available to manage bed-wetting and the advantages and disadvantages of each. For example some people have problems with side leakage because they move around a lot at night, some people urinate more profusely than others at night, etc. and some brands and types of diapers are more effective than others at dealing with these particular problems. In addition some styles of diapers are more durable than others.    Finally parents might choose a particular brand or style of diaper due to financial reasons. For instance I read about a parent who had an older child with a bed-wetting problem and he was a very heavy wetter. Originally he used pull-ups to protect the child but due to the level of incontinence he had to use three or more per night. The parent had limited financial means and couldn’t afford to spend the money on the amount of pull-ups required so he switched to plastic pants and pin-on diapers. These are just some of the reasons for choosing one type and brand of diaper over another. With just about any type of consumer purchase there are some brands and products that are more effective than others for various problems and situations, more adequately meet a consumer’s needs, etc. and diapers are no exception.    I think it’s important to discuss why you chose a particular style of diaper to manage the youngster’s bed-wetting for the following reasons: it shows that you’re sympathetic because you’re taking the youngster’s feelings about wearing the diapers into consideration,it shows that it’s not some arbitrary decision designed to belittle or degrade the child or teenager, and it shows that you have the youngster’s best interests at heart. As one book on adolescent psychology put it- “As the adolescent pushes for autonomy, the wise adult relinquishes control in those areas in which the adolescent can make reasonable decisions and continues to guide the adolescent in areas where the adolescent’s knowledge is more limited.” In my opinion the choosing of an appropriate product to manage bed-wetting would fall into the second category. Adults have more life experience. This life experience makes them more effective at controlling
